Obituary

Age 89.  Born on November 8, 1927 in Mass City, Michigan.

Preceded in death by his loving wife Shirley of 61 years.  He is survived by his children Sharon (Arvo) Parkila, Gary (Gail), Bryan (Jeannette), and Kristen (William) Will. His grandchildren Michael (Erika) Burke, Julie Hall, Amanda Burke, Eric (Kylene) Parkila, Bryan (Alyssa) Burke, Jessica Burke, Andrew (Samantha) Parkila, Matthew (Brittany) Burke, Brittany Burke, Ian Will, and Olivia Will. His great grandchildren Emma Hall, Owen Hall, Alex Burke, Jackson Burke, Mason Burke, Lucas Parkila, Riley Colwell, Aubreen Parkila, Dawson Burke, Cameron Colwell, and Lexi Parkila. His sister Alice Kaurala, and his very spoiled dog Sadie.

Alfred served in the US Navy and was the last WWII veteran from the VFW Post 4167 in Mass City, Michigan. He also served in the US Army as a Master Sargent in Korea and was awarded the Bronze Star.  He retired from Bentley Tool in 1999 but continued working with his son Bryan in home improvements.  Alfred and Shirley moved to Garden City in 1955 and had lived in the same house for almost 62 years raising 4 children there.  He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed going to his hunting camp "Camp Bag a Buck" in the UP each November.  He loved watching the Tigers and Lions and did a lot of arm chair coaching.  Al could fix anything, he knew his electrical, plumbing, and mechanical, if it was broke he could fix it, if you needed something not yet invented he could make it, and for the most of his 89 years could run circles around any of the younger people, he was a wealth of knowledge.
