Obituary

Dr. Ali Rabbani, age 85, of Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, June 6 th , 2022, surrounded by family.

Dr. Ali Rabbani was born on March 16 th , 1937, in Hamadan, Iran. He attended the University of Tehran Medical School and completed his internship at the Mt. Carmel Mercy Hospital in Detroit, MI in 1961. He went on to complete his Pediatrics residency at the Children's Hospital of Michigan, as well as fellowship training in Respiratory Diseases and Hematology. In 1966 he spent three years as a Pediatric Consultant in the United States Air Force stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany, followed by completing a year of Neonatal Medicine fellowship training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. After completing his training, he joined the staff at St. John Hospital, in Detroit, MI in 1969, and was appointed Clinical Associated Professor of Pediatrics at Wayne State University School of Medicine. He established the St. John Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in 1970, one of the first in the country.  Dr. Rabbani was appointed Chief of Pediatrics at the age of 34, a title he held until his retirement. In 1974 he established the Pediatric residency program at St. John Hospital, which has grown to 27 residents and is a nationally regarded program. In large part to his work, St. John Hospital and Medical Center was accepted for membership by the National Association for Children's Hospitals in 2012.

He is survived by Dr. Mahdokht Rabbani, a loving and dedicated wife of 48 years. His oldest son, Dr. Bob Rabbani, is a cardiologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. He is married to Dr. Anna Rabbani, and they have two sons, Zachary and Jacob. His youngest son, Dr. Behi Rabbani, is a cardiologist at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is married to Kiana Rabbani and have two children, Nathan and Ella.

He is also survived by his siblings, Dr. Mehdi Rabbani and late wife Parirokh, Dr. Hadi Rabbani and wife Dr. Guity Rabbani, Maliheh Rabbani and late husband Dr. Saeed Saleh, and sister-in-law Paricher Vakili and husband Dr. Parviz Vakili. He is preceded in death by the late Seddigheh Rabbani and late husband Hossein Heydari, the late Zahra Rabbani and late husband Sohbat Kamran, and the late Dr. Mohammad Rabbani and wife Nayer Rabbani. He is also preceded in death by his mother-in-law the late Zari Pourmarz.

Visitation will start on Thursday, June 9 th at 9 am at the Islamic House of Wisdom (22575 Ann Arbor Trail, Dearborn Heights, MI 48127), followed by the funeral at 1 pm at the United Memorial Gardens (4800 Curtis Rd, Plymouth, MI 48170).
