IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Alvin Bright,
Sr.
May 15, 1931 – November 1, 2021
Alvin B. Bright, Sr. was called home on November 1, 2021. Although many will miss his wisdom, grace, and humor in this life, we have assurance through Jesus Christ that we will enjoy the richness of his deep voice, his warm embrace, and gentle kiss again one day in Heaven.
Alvin was born on May 15, 1931 in Knoxville, Tennessee and spent his 90 years loving, serving, and giving to others. He was the sixth of nine children (Helen, Margaret, Mary Lou, Gordon Jr., James, Leon, Katherine, Charles "Tommy") born to Gordon Arthur and Lucy Jane (Clifton) Bright and the last of them to say goodbye to this life. He is survived by his two half-sisters, Betty Lou Martin and Shirley Ann Metcalf (husband John) from Gordon's second marriage to Mary (Foster) Bright.
Alvin knew the joys and opportunities that come from 25 years of marriage to his childhood sweetheart, Betty Jean (Cassell) Bright who was called home on December 14, 1976. They leave behind their three children, Alvin B. Bright Jr., Robert Wayne Bright, Kelly Bright Wittman (husband Jeffrey) and six grandchildren Matthew Bright, Nicole Bright, Justin Paul Bright (wife Valerie), Jaime Anna Bright-Wittman, Ryan Burton Bright, and Amanda Kay Bright. They now bear the greatest of challenges - living out the giant-sized legacy that is left from Alvin's time in this life.
Alvin found love again with Leyda (Brandt) Bright in 1978 with whom he spent another 30 years in marriage before her Heavenly homecoming in 2008. They shared the pleasure of loving and taking care of Leyda's extended family who remain to cherish their memories. Leyda's sister Omaira Torres, her daughter Anna Milena Torres, Milena's two children Alejandro Parra (wife Gail) and Marta Lucia Babinchak (husband Will), and finally Alejandro and Marta's six children who adoringly referred to Alvin as "Grandpa Bright" - Victoria "Tori", Alejandro Jr., Olivia, Gabriel, William, and Samuel.
Alvin was particularly close to his brother James Bright (wife Peggy Jane Burnette). With James's passing in 1986, he continued to look out for Peggy until her homecoming in 2015 along with their three adult children, Deborah, James Jr. "Jimmy" (wife Karen), and Douglas (wife Peggy). Debbie, Jimmy, and Doug always saw Uncle Alvin as much more than just their favorite uncle.
Across Alvin's 90 years, there are too many acts of service, gifts of grace and generosity, and testimonies of God's impact on his life to mention. However, Alvin was especially proud of his active duty service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and valued his work as an elder at Good Shepherd Reformed Church where he led their bus ministry and organized Easter pancake breakfasts.
2 Timothy 4:7 - Alvin has fought the good fight, he has finished the race, he has kept the faith. Welcome Home, Alvin!
