IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Arnold E.
Johnson
September 4, 1936 – July 4, 2022
Arnold E. Johnson, age 85 of Westland, Michigan left his earthly body to be with his Lord on July 4, 2022, at American House in Livonia, Michigan.
Arnold, affectionately called "Arnie", was born on September 4, 1936, to Bernard C. Johnson and Celia (Mattila) Johnson in Ironwood, Michigan.
Arnie spent his early childhood in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula. Ironwood was the land of Trenary toast, pasties, skiing, iron mines, and Lake Superior. In the early 1940s, his family moved south to Detroit. Arnie graduated from Cass Technical High School. On July 16, 1960, he married the love of his life, Lorna.
Arnie supported his young family by working full time and going to school at night. He graduated from Lawrence Technical University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He began his career working as a draftsman for Detroit Toledo and Ironton Railroad. His love of trains continued throughout his 34-year career. He became an expert on bridges, ramps, and rails. He retired from Grand Trunk Western Railroad in 1991.
Arnie loved golfing, bowling, playing cards, and having the best front lawn on the block. Sunday dinners were a routine where he shared stories of his many adventures. Summertime meant long road trips in the station wagon to visit relatives in Ironwood.
However, it was his love of television for which he will always be remembered. In 1972, he bought the family's first color TV, and it came with a remote control. As technology improved, Arnie successfully navigated the remote to watch up to 3 TV shows at the same time. He also loved watching sports like Detroit Tigers baseball, Michigan football, Michigan State football, and Detroit Lions. Arnie also loved watching old movies and tv shows as well.
Arnie is survived by his wife, Lorna; daughter, Rebecca Johnson; sons Gregory (Vicki) Johnson; Gordon (Allison) Johnson; and Jeff (Bonnie Eslinger) Johnson; sister-in-law Janet Johnson; beloved grandchildren, Benjamin, Lila, Elise, and Sterling; numerous cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bernard Johnson; and two nephews.
