His family was his greatest treasure.
A Korean War Era Veteran, Charles served his country with honor during a critical period, embracing the challenges and responsibilities that came with his military associations. After his service, he began a career at Ford Motor Company where he retired as a Product Planning Manager in 1988 after 33 years of dedicated service and continued his automotive career with the Kenmar Automotive Corporation. In 1953 Charles began and pursued his lifelong passion for big game hunting, becoming a professional hunter in Sudan. His interest in Africa began when he was a young boy. He read many books about Africa and eventually found a way to travel there. His adventures spanned over 65 years of big game hunting across Africa, earning him recognition and several prestigious memberships and awards within hunting and conservation communities. He was a member of the International Professional Hunting Association (IPHA), an honorary member of the East African Professional Hunters Association, and a life member of the Safari Club International (SCI). Charles was President of the Detroit Safari Club three times and President of the Novi Safari Club twice. His contributions to the field were honored with the Safari Club International Mr. Elroy Award, SCI World Hunting Award Ring, and SCI Conservation Award.
Being a veteran and a patriot, Charles's favorite role in the Safari Club was participating in the Wounded Warrior Project. He sponsored many veterans and brought them hunting over many years. Charles also authored two books: Sun Over the Dark Continent and Hunting from the Bottom to the Top of the World. In these books he shares his extensive knowledge and experiences in Africa, further cementing his legacy in the world of big game hunting. He was also a member of the Plum Hallow Country Club for 41 years. Remembered as an adventurous spirit and a devoted family man, Charles's life was a testament to his love for exploration and commitment to his family. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the lasting contributions he made to his community and the fields of hunting and conservation. He will be deeply missed by many.
