IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Donald "Don"
W. Reeves
August 30, 1933 – September 14, 2019
Donald Warren Reeves was born the eighth child to Cornelius Sr. and Mary Lou Reeves, on August 30, 1933 in Saline, Michigan. Donald transitioned from this life at Beaumont Hospital in Wayne, Michigan on September 14, 2019. He was 86 years old.
At the age of thirteen, Don was baptized by the late Rev. Garther Roberson Sr. at the Second Baptist Church of Ypsilanti. In high school, Don was on Lincoln High School's first football team along with his brother, Bob. He was fast and ferocious as a defensive tackle. As a matter of fact, the only injury that his brother, Bob sustained playing football was at the hands of his brother, Donald. During practice, Don temporarily knocked Bob out with a vicious tackle. After graduating from Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti, he attended Cleary College in Ypsilanti, Michigan. While attending Cleary College, Donald was drafted into the United States Military. He was stationed at the U.S. Army Chemical Center, in Baltimore, Maryland. While stationed in Maryland, Don often talked about his wonderful visits to his sister Bertha's home in Yonkers, New York.
An avid jazz lover, Don often attended clubs in New York with his sister and her husband, Bernard Bailey. After being discharged from the service, Don attended Eastern Michigan University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree with a major in art education. He later received his Master of Arts Degree from Eastern Michigan University in 1977. While attending EMU, Don became a member of the Theta Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Later, Don became a charter member of the Phi Graduate Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. After graduating from Eastern Michigan University, Don began his teaching career in the Willow Run School System where he taught art and English until his retirement. Don was an avid football fan. He loved the University of Michigan, Go Blue! And the Detroit Lions. If things were not going well for one of his teams, he would often call Bob, his brother, and say, "What's wrong with those fools?!"
Don had dear friends that he would spend time with, give advice to, and was always willing to help. He was a caring and devoted person to those he cared deeply about. Don loved trolling the Salvation Army shops and had an eye for beautiful antique furniture and decorative items. He often shared his treasure hunt finds with family and friends. His home is a mere museum of collector's items and beautiful art. Back in the day, the family couldn't wait for Uncle Donald to show up to the reunions with his famous pineapple upside down and rum cakes! He could really burn in the kitchen! Among his many talents, he was also a very gracious host. One of the sweetest things that Don would do at reunions was to ballroom dance with his niece and Goddaughter, Dawn Fuqua. After retiring, Don had the opportunity to travel to various countries which he enjoyed. Don was also very interested in politics. One of his favorite past times was watching MSNBC and shouting at the TV screen.
Donald was proceeded in death by his mother and father; his sisters Annie Maud Walton, Bertha M. Bailey, Leona Tennant, Mary Maxey, Doris Williams; two brothers, Milton Reeves Sr. and Cornelius Reeves Jr. Donald is survived by his brother, Robert Ajor Reeves of Belleville, Michigan and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, his special friends, Todd and Bill, and devoted friends.
