IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Dorothy Stone
Calmes
April 6, 1935 – January 23, 2024
Dorothy (Decie) Stone Calmes, age 88, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on April 6, 1935, in Summit, New Jersey, the daughter of John Knickerbocker Porter Stone, Jr. and Dorothy Woodhull Stone.
She attended the Kent Place School in Summit, New Jersey and graduated from Marjorie Webster Junior College in Washington, D.C. She completed her studies for the Diaconate at the School of Theology, Diocese of Michigan. Dorothy was an ordained Episcopal deacon and candidate for ordination to the priesthood. She served as a chaplain at Chelsea Hospital in Chelsea, Michigan, and a Deacon at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brighton, Michigan, where she officiated, preached, wrote for the bulletin and provided pastoral counseling. In recognition of her service to St. Paul's, a chapter of the daughters of the King (the Dorothy Chapter), was founded in her honor.
She was a lifelong learner, and had many interests, including Buddhist thought, poetry (which she both read and wrote) and taught crewel embroidery. Her love of animals and nature was embodied in Peaceable Kingdom Farms, the home of Dorothy and her husband of 64 years, Richard (Dick) A. Calmes.
She was the beloved wife of Richard A. Calmes (deceased); loving mother of Carolyn Calmes Shammas and Bruce Woodhull Calmes and wife Eleanor Calmes; grandmother of Charles R. M. Shammas, Constance F. Shammas, Jessica Calmes Engel, Amy Calmes James, Charlotte Calmes Paradis, Joseph Allen Woodhull Calmes and great grandmother to five great grandchildren. She was the cherished sister of John Knickerbocker Porter Stone, III, James Stone and David Edey Stone (deceased).
A funeral service will be held this summer at St. Cuthbert's Chapel on Mac Mahan Island, Maine, where she spent many happy summers as a child and later, with her children and family.
Her unwavering faith, strength of character and purity of spirit touched many lives. As she advised others to "turn towards the Light," her family and friends seek solace in the knowledge that she is now in the eternal presence of, and one with, that Divine Light.
Please take a moment to share a memory about Dorothy or to leave a condolence to the Calmes Family on Dorothy's Tribute Wall.
