IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Eugene John
Standard
October 23, 1928 – October 8, 2022
Eugene John Standard, God's good and faithful servant, started his eternal life on October 8, 2022.
He lived his 93 years on earth with the clear belief that his time spent here was preparing him for his real, eternal life. Gene joins the love of his life of 57 years, Marion, in heaven. After his Catholic faith, his family was next in importance. He is the beloved father of Victoria (Dimitrie) Toth, Denise (Greg) Rygiel, Sharon (Jim) Haney, Mark Standard and proud grandpa of Jamel (Bailee) Chokr and Diana Chokr. Brother of Geraldine Standard.
Born in his grandmother's house on October 23, 1928, Gene was the second son of John & Sophia Standard who proceeded him in passing, along with his two brothers, Ronald, and Raymond. He started working when he was 13 years old and enlisted in the Army on his 18 th birthday.
In 1953 he met Marion Miklosky at a YMCA dance class in Dearborn and on May 7, 1955. Gene and Marion became Mr. & Mrs. Standard. He bought a house in Garden City for his new bride, and they lived there until God took them home. As you looked around that house, you saw that he lived simply and put on no airs, but it was a life of quality. He never took a vacation or bought a new car, but his family was provided for, and he put all four of his children through 12 years of Catholic school each.
His interests and knowledge ran deep, and his love of learning set a good example to those around him. His common sense, practicality and logical thought process served him well in life. Never one to be idle, he made the most out of each of his days and always seemed to have a camera or a tool in his hands. He had a lifelong interest in photography and created endless memories for so many in all he recorded through his camera lens.
He will always be remembered as a self-taught craftsman, carpenter and woodworker that could complete any project, big or small. His tools were like money to him-to be used for the good of whomever they could benefit. He was willing to do anything for anyone at any time, as many people can attest to, and he derived great happiness and satisfaction from creating, building, or fixing something for someone else.
He was an active member of St. Raphael (St. Thomas) church since 1955, serving as an usher for 65 years, and volunteering in many different capacities. He had a wonderful sense of humor, and as a member of the Greatest Generation, always made the best of a situation, never complaining.
In 1967 he started a business called Michigan Imported Cars in Westland, MI with his friend and longtime business partner, Dale Flohr. His impeccable work habits and dedication to always doing a good job inspired many. He truly enjoyed what he did, from wrecker runs to bookkeeping, and worked until he was 90 years old!
When he wasn't spending time with his family or doing for others, Gene played the accordion and keyboard, loved Big Band music and breakfast at Burger King, rode a Moped around the neighborhood, liked trains and had a special fondness for the Yankee Air Museum. He enjoyed taking one day trips to Chicago on Amtrak just for the ride! He relished discussing religious topics and looked forward to meeting Moses and the Twelve Apostles.
