Evelyn Landrum, age 94, of Garden City, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2019. Family and Friends had been with her. Her daughter was at her side.
Evelyn was born in New Jersey, the third of five girls, daughter of Howard and Jessie. She graduated from Bogota High School where she enjoyed the camaraderie of students who became lifelong friends. She was especially fond of dramatics, whether it was a role in the school production of Macbeth or patriotic skits promoting war bonds. Evelyn enjoyed playing "guard" on the basketball team and enjoyed home economics, especially when the class made chocolate glazed doughnuts. She would reminisce about going fishing with her Uncle Harry and trips to New York City with her Dad to watch the Rangers. There were more fond memories of seeing the young
Sinatra
perform at the Paramount. After graduation, Evelyn worked in New York at Macy's and then at the Guaranty Bank & Trust, Fifth Avenue branch. She frequently spent lunch hour at St. Patrick's Cathedral which was in walking distance.
Evelyn especially loved spending time at the lake and at the Jersey shore, where at age 19 she met the love of her life and future husband, Jim, a young GI soon to be sent to Europe during WWII.
In 1958, Evelyn and Jim moved to Michigan with their two children. She was an active parishioner at St. Raphael's parish (now St. Thomas the Apostle). She served in various parish organizations such as the Rosary Altar Society and Catholic Youth Organization. She taught Sunday school and served as a Eucharistic minister.
When her children entered college, Evelyn returned to work in retail sales at J.L. Hudson in Westland. Her daughter recalls that during the busy Christmas season, after working a hectic day, Evelyn would then do her own Christmas shopping and afterward return home to bake cookies long into the night.
In subsequent years, Evelyn joyfully spent time with her three Grandsons and selflessly cared for Jim. In recent times, her eight Great Grandchildren brought her bliss. She greatly enjoyed music, theatre; loved to read, garden and keep up with world events. She wrote beautiful letters; one dear friend remarked that she kept every letter Evelyn ever wrote to her. Evelyn loved to laugh, enjoyed the humor of others and was the best listener, ever. She was gentle with a deep inner strength. Most profoundly, Evelyn was filled with love and her family and friends knew that they were loved.
Evelyn was the loving wife of the late James. Beloved Mother of Nancy (the late Henry) Malm and the late J. Michael. Mother in law of Patricia, Grandmother of Robert "Felix" (Leslie), David (Laurel) and Peter. Great Grandmother of Julien, Katelyn, Ellie, Pierrette, Sebastien, Alexandre, Sabine and Laida. Many cherished nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.
