Felice Summers Age 102
Beloved wife of the late William. Dear mother of Robert (Kathleen). Grandmother of Benjamyn (Marybeth) and the late Melanee. Great grandmother of Joshua and Melanie. Also survived by mnay nieces and nephews.
Felice began her eternal life on Nov. 18, 2013, leaving behind her earthly life at the age of 102. She went to rejoin her parents, sisters, husband, granddaughter and all her other family and friends who preceded her on the final journey.
Felice was one of four girls born to Duilio and Felixine Martelli (Connault) in Detroit when cars were a novelty, the horse still pulled the ice wagon, the Boblo
boats were new, the Detroit Zoo had not moved to Royal Oak and Belle Isle and the river boats like the Tashmoo were in their glorious heyday. When she was a toddler the First World War had not yet started, the Civil War was a still vivid memory to many, and Prohibition and the Depression were off in the distant future.
She came of age during that Depression and the war that followed, meeting her future husband, William Summers, at the Grande Ballroom and later marrying
him in 1945 in Seattle as he was about to ship out for the Philippines. The train ride to Seattle was one of her most cherished memories. After the war they settled on the west side of Detroit, raising their one child, Robert, and generally living a simple, happy life enjoying frequent gatherings with her sisters, in-laws, cousins and friends and outings to Boblo, the Zoo and, most often, Kensington
Metro Park.
She did duty as a den mother, school lunch mother and a retail sales clerk at Montgomery Ward until her retirement in 1976, after which she and her husband
sold their house in Detroit and moved to Garden City. When her husband passed away in 1979, she became involved with St. Raphael's, working in Religious Education, Right to Life and numerous other parish organizations and groups. She was also able to spend substantial time with her grandchildren, Benjamyn and Melanee. In addition, Felice was very active at Focus Hope until
advancing age made it too difficult to continue. She was blessed in her last years, enjoying time with her son Bob, daughter-in-law Kathy, grandson Ben, his wife MaryBeth and great grandchildren Joshua and Melanie.
Late in life she participated in the StoryCorps Project, leaving just a few of her many stories as a permanent record in the Library of Congress. Having lived a life that began at the end of the Steam Age and progressed through the advent of radio, color tv, the exploration of space, modern medicine and nuclear power, having gone from the wireless to cell phones, Felice leaves behind a legacy of love and caring for family and friends that has been the hallmark of her life and, most likely, at least part of her secret to longevity.
