IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Florence 'Flo'
Mattis
August 6, 1925 – February 27, 2024
Age 98
Florence was born in Ubly MI on August 6, 1925. She was one of 11 children. She attended school in a one-room schoolhouse, literally walking 2 miles each way. At the age of 18 Flo headed to Detroit during the winter months with her sisters; her first job was at Kroger. Her future husband, Frank, attended a wedding in Ubly and sat next to Flo. Six months later they were married, spending 73 loving years together in the Dearborn area, raising four children. She was the ultimate volunteer: a girl scout leader, a baseball coach, a member of the St. Linus Christian Women, even serving as Treasurer at the age of 87. She also worked many political and automotive elections.
Florence faithfully practiced her Catholicism, deeply loved her family, and wholeheartedly treasured her friends. She and Frank took dance lessons, bowled together, played bridge and pinochle, and joined a golf league at the age of 40, playing regularly with family and friends until COVID at age 95. Their travels took them to Belgium, Alaska, Panama, Hawaii, Arizona, and Las Vegas, as well as their time-shares in Tennessee and Florida.
Florence was predeceased by her husband, Frank. She is survived by children David (Lorraine), Diane (the late Dennis) Droba, Lynn (Richard) Kocan, and Jim (Mary); grandchildren Christine (Andy) Deacon, Kimberly Kocan, Jessica (Joel) Carolan, Michael (Heather) Mattis, Paul (Kori) Mattis, Justin (Mel) Droba, and Neil (Amanda) Kocan; great-grandchildren Danny, Alex, Nick, and Luke (Deacon) and Veronica (Carolan). She is also survived by her sisters Sophie (Sawle) and Louise (Gibson), and brother-in-law Richard Krug. She was predeceased by siblings Gertrude, Ann, Stanley, Irene, Clem, Martha, Ruth, and Ervin.
