Becker
December 1, 1929 – February 23, 2019
Frederick Charles Becker, 89, of Dearborn, Michigan, passed away on February 23, 2019.
Fred was born in Detroit, MI on December 1, 1929 to Edward and Frida Becker. He attended the Henry Ford Trade School and Ford Motor Company Apprentice School before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951. He completed U.S. Army Field Artillery Officer Candidate School in 1952 and was commissioned as a 2 nd Lieutenant. He served in the 7 th Infantry Division as a forward observer in Korea. While in Korea, he was wounded in the Battle on Pork Chop Hill and was awarded a Purple Heart.
Upon returning from war, Fred enrolled in Wayne State University where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree and Master of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering. Prior to completing his college degrees, Fred married long-time family friend, Shirley Meier, on September 9, 1956. In addition to his professional engineering career, Fred continued to serve in the Army Reserve where he achieved the rank of Major and ultimately retired from the military in 1974. He spent the majority of his engineering career working for the Ford Motor Company where he retired in 1991 after 25 years.
Religion always played an important role in Fred's life, but he confessed his faith in Jesus Christ and became a communicant member of Atonement Lutheran Church in the late 1950's. He remained very active in his church, holding a variety of positions, up until his final days. After his retirement from Ford, Fred immediately began taking classes to become a Parish Deacon within the Missouri Synod Lutheran Church. He graduated from the Michigan District Deacon Program and served in that capacity at Atonement for more than a decade providing word and sacrament ministry to the sick and shut-ins.
Family was an important part of Fred's life throughout his years. As a parent, he got involved in coaching baseball, assisting with scouting activities, and attending a variety of school events. In his latter years, he took pleasure in watching his grandchildren participate in sports, music, and theater. He and Shirley especially enjoyed camping trips with their family and friends.
Fred is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
