Obituary

Age 86.

Beloved wife of Giovanni "John".  Loving mother of Maria, Anna, Cathy (Mark) Tschirhart and Christina (Bob Bucciarelli).  Cherished grandmother of Lauren, Alex, Brittany, Nicholas and John.  Dear sister of Anthony (Janet) Vassallo, James (Sandy) Vassallo, Annette (Bob) Fox and the late Rosemary Iafrate.

Joanne was the oldest of 5 children born to James and Jeanette Vassallo. The family resided in Detroit before moving to Dearborn Heights. As a child, Joanne longed to attend a Catholic school and pleaded with her mother to enroll her. She attended through high school, graduating from St. Cecilia in Detroit. Joanne was a devout Catholic with a special devotion to the Blessed Mother. Joanne clutched her rosary during her last remaining days.

After high school, Joanne worked at the Detroit Public Library until she met John Marcantonio at a dance and married and began her family. John and Joanne have lived in the same home in Dearborn for close to 63 years in which they raised their 4 daughters, Maria, Anna, Cathy and Tina. Joanne loved being a mother and was "room mom" and brownie leader for many years. Joanne also loved her garden and flowers, and was known for her great cooking. Joanne is affectionately known as "JoJo" to her grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and other loved ones. All were welcomed at the Marcantonio home, the place where friends and neighbors became family.

JoJo loved music, dancing, movies, playing games, and slot machines. John and Joanne enjoyed many trips to Las Vegas. She also enjoyed trips with her daughter Maria to Massachusetts, Charleston, Savannah, and Alaska. She supported all the local sports teams, but had special affinity for the Tigers and the Lions. She also was a supporter of many charities. She liked going on outings and just having fun! She loved Camp Dearborn where many memories were made enjoying family picnics and camping in Tent Village, waking to "Chicken Fat".

JoJo was a wonderful mother and grandmother; her grandchildren were the real joy of her life. Lauren, Alex, Brittany, Nicholas, and John enjoyed decorating Christmas sugar cookies, dyeing Easter eggs, singing Happy Birthday to Baby Jesus on Christmas Eve, family dinners, sleepovers, trips to the mall, going to the movies and lunches out with JoJo. The traditions and time she spent with them will be cherished memories forever. Joanne Marcantonio was loved by many and will be missed by all.
