IN LOVING MEMORY OF
John "Bob"
Robert Rock
November 24, 1931 – January 9, 2017
Age 85
Affectionately called "Rocky " by his beloved wife Leslie Dear father of Susan Rock, Kathleen Rock, Erika Harrison. Loving grandfather of Jessica and Vanessa Gant, Michael and Olivia Harrison, Jamie and Kirsten Stevens and great grandfather of Gabrielle Franklin. Loving brother of Lois Keryluk, Doris Walters and Nancy Zelek. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
He was born in Beaver Dam Kentucky. He spent a brief period of his childhood in Detroit before moving to "Dearborn Township" which would later become Dearborn Heights. He was proud of his birth place and the community he grew up in. As a teenager he had a faithful dog, Spot, whom he never forgot. The age he died got older and older every time Bob told the story. Last count, Spot was 24 years old when he died. Bob started out as a school teacher. He was passionate about teaching and would often share colorful stories about his students and experiences. He later went to Wayne State University Law School and was 7th in his class. He began his first law practice in a former feed store while operating a tutoring business. Bob was known as an excellent and skillful lawyer. He was tough, but fair, inside and outside of court. As a proud member of Dearborn Heights, Bob was actively involved in the social welfare of others and the community at large. He spent 50 years as a member of the Dearborn Heights Lions club, serving as president two times throughout that period. Bob spent time delivering Meals on Wheels and was a board member on the Commission of Aging from 2004 to 2011. He was also a board member at Project Paradigm, which was a local community mental health agency. For a brief period he functioned as Dearborn Heights City Attorney where he enjoyed history and the dynamics of city government. Bob truly cared about serving the needs of others and this impacted his children's lives and careers. Susan works tirelessly as a criminal defense attorney while Kathy works passionately in her role as a community social worker, both known for going above and beyond the call of duty, as their dad did. Bob was best known for his sense of humor and recounting old stories at the dinner table with family and friends. His favorite activity was golf, and to his delight he once received a trophy for a hole in one, a true achievement for a leisurely golfer. He liked sports and was a good baseball couch to young people. Bob was generous with his family and friends he made the world a better place. He will truly be missed by those that knew and loved him.
