Obituary

Julian K. Phelps, Jr., age 78, of Howell, Michigan, passed away on March 6, 2026, after a courageous seven-month battle with cancer. Born on August 17, 1947, in Highland Park, Michigan, Julian lived a life defined by hard work, quiet strength, and unwavering dedication to those he loved.

Julian devoted more than 35 years to Ford Motor Company, retiring in 2009 after a career he took great pride in. One of his greatest joys was seeing both of his daughters follow in his footsteps by building their own careers at Ford.

He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life—golfing, hunting, tending to his garden, taking vacations, trips to the casino, and a good game of euchre with family and friends. Julian was known as someone who could fix or build just about anything. Whether it was a project around the house or helping someone in need, he was always willing to lend a hand and never expected anything in return.

Above all else, Julian was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grandfather. His family was the center of his world, and he worked tirelessly to give them the life he believed they deserved. His strength, confidence, and deep sense of responsibility were qualities that defined him. In a touching moment, Julian became a great-grandfather just one day before his passing.

Julian will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Judy (Renaud); his daughters, Jackie McGue (Mike) of Highland and Julie Phelps of Dearborn Heights; his grandchildren, Kevin (Kayla) and Brooke; and his great-granddaughter, Blaire. He is also survived by his sister, Kay (George); his brothers, Darryl and Jerry; his favorite Aunt, Hilda; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.

Julian was preceded in death by his parents, Julian and Callie (Nunnally) Phelps; his daughter, Janet; and his brothers, James "Poojay" and Charlie.

Julian’s legacy is one of integrity, resilience, and deep love for his family. Those who knew him will remember his steady presence, his practical wisdom, his silly jokes and the lasting impact he made on the lives of those around him.
