IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Magdalen 'Maggie'
Radford
November 10, 1937 – October 23, 2023
Age 85
Magdalen "Maggie" was born in Detroit, Michigan the 8th child of 11 children of Frank B. & Elizabeth G. Wesserling. Maggie's family lived on the east side of Detroit until they moved across town to Chamberlain St. on the west side when she was 5 yrs. old. She grew up near Patton Park & Woodmere Cemetery and attended Higgins Elementary, Wilson Jr. High, & Southwestern High. She was on the basketball team in both Junior High & High School and, even though she was only slightly over 5ft. tall, was one of their better players.
She & her younger sisters all worked at the Chamberlain Bakery across the street from their house as soon as they were old enough. Then, at 16 she got a job downtown at Woolworths & had to take the bus back & forth to work, which she enjoyed because she always loved people-watching. It was through one of her co-workers at Woolworths that she met her future husband & love of her life Robert "Bob" Radford.
Since her family was so large, their home was always bustling with activity. In fact, the first time Bob came to pick her up at her parents home it was a Sunday & he was amazed (& slightly intimidated) by the crowd. He thought they must be having a party that she forgot to mention, but she then explained to him that this was just her brothers & sisters and their kids over for a Sunday visit!
Maggie was a wonderful person who made friends with everyone she met. She & Bob moved to Garden City after they married & raised their 3 children there. They were long-time members of St. Raphael Parish. Maggie was a homemaker & was always very focused on taking care of her family, & did a great job of it! Though she wasn't too big on cooking, she was the queen of laundry stain removal & never found a stain she couldn't get out! She was a great listener & always had a cup of coffee and an ear to lend to anyone with a problem. She & Bob were pretty much inseparable, and people were always amazed that they still held hands after so many years together.
She was preceded in death, just 2 months ago, by her beloved husband of 60 years, Bob. She will be deeply missed by her three children and their spouses, Linda (Thomas) Shinsky, Donna (Charles) Collins, and Robert L. (Rebecca), and by her grandchildren Andrew (Shari), Natasha (Philipp), Kelsey (Tyler) May, Robert W. II (Melanie), Mackenzie (Jacob) Bearden, & her great-grandchildren Easton, Elliette, & Oakley. She will also be missed by her dear sister Vivian Cacioppo, several sisters-in-law, & many nieces, nephews, friends, & neighbors.
Visitation will be at the John N. Santeiu & Son Funeral Home in Garden City on Wednesday, October 25th from 2-8 pm, with a 6:30pm Rosary Service. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church (formerly St. Raphael) in Garden City. In-state at 9:30am & mass at 10am.
