IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Margaret Mary
Gallagher
September 24, 1940 – July 22, 2022
Margaret Mary Gallagher (known as "Peggy") passed away peacefully at the home she shared with her sisters on July 22, 2022, at the age of 81. She was surrounded by many loving family members in the days before and at the time of her passing. Peggy is survived by her sisters Mary and Bridget "Gert" Gallagher, Catherine "Kathleen" McCarthy, Evelyn Sheehan, and by her brother Francis Gallagher, and her sister-in-law Rosemary Gallagher. She was predeceased by her brothers Patrick and John, and brothers-in-law William McCarthy and John Sheehan. Peggy was a beloved aunt to 17 nieces and nephews, 55 grand-nieces and nephews, and an ever-growing number of great-grand-nieces and nephews.
Peggy was the youngest of eight children born to John and Mary Ellen Gallagher near the town of Tubbercurry in County Sligo, Ireland. She emigrated to East Dearborn, Michigan as a young woman. Initially, she lived with her older brother Patrick, who was also her godfather, and with her sisters. Peggy and three of her sisters including Kathleen later settled in Dearborn Heights and lived in three homes within a two-block radius. She and her sister Gert lived happily together for many years, and, in recent years, were joined by their sister Mary. Mary was Peggy's godmother, whom Peggy trusted as a second mother. Throughout the years, the four sisters have been a much-admired tandem team in all endeavors. Peggy had the most devoted of friendships with all her older siblings.
For many years Peggy worked as a dietary aide at the former Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit. Those people blessed to know her knew Peggy to be a humble and unassuming person. She had a quiet personality, and was not one to put herself forward, yet she was always very generous with her time and energy. She would always look for an opportunity in every circumstance to step up and help in any way needed. On the home front, she enjoyed keeping busy and showed aptitude in so many areas - cooking delicious meals, painting the house as meticulously as any professional painter, styling her sisters' hair as beautifully as any professional hair stylist, and giving her nieces and nephews driving lessons!
Peggy used to enjoy visiting family and just chatting. She would rarely show up without bringing with her some small gift, or treat, or baked good for whomever she was visiting. She was unfailingly thoughtful in such small ways. She had an impish and self-deprecating sense of humor and a sweet smile which endeared her to those who knew her even slightly. Peggy was an enthusiastic storyteller. She was extraordinarily observant, with a phenomenal memory for detail and the ability to recall, verbatim, conversations that had taken place many years ago; as well as the dress of persons involved, and amazingly detailed chronicles of circumstances and situations.
Peggy was a deeply faithful Catholic, with a special devotion to Blessed Solanus Casey, and the scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Her frequent attendance at Holy Mass, Eucharistic adoration, and daily recitation of the Rosary have long supported her loved ones and others.
The final few weeks of Peggy's life were marked by disheartening health concerns which she endured with stoic resignation, without any complaint or self-pity. Her courage, humor, and graceful determination in the face of adversity served as an inspiration to her loved ones who were with her. During this time, she drew great comfort from her deep and abiding faith. Peggy aspired above all to fulfill God's will in her life. May she rest in eternal peace in the tender and loving care of Our Heavenly Father.
