Obituary

Mary Ann Downey, a longtime resident of Garden City, MI, passed away peacefully on September 14, 2025, at the age of 90.

Mary Ann was born June 16, 1935, in Detroit, MI, to the late Joseph (Lily) Grzebieniowski and Florence Brown. On September 20, 1952, she married the love of her life, the late Eugene Downey, and together they built a beautiful family and shared more than 40 years of marriage.

Mary Ann was the proud and devoted mother of Thomas (Deborah), Barbara (Donald Jr.) Nowka, Lawrence (Corrine), Mark (Kelly), James (Wendy), and Timothy (Karen). She was a loving and cherished grandmother to Thomas Jr., Bryan (Heather), Brian (Alica) Hanley, James (Sunny) Hanley, Donald III (Liz) Nowka, Sarah (Nathan) Taylor, Scott (Candy), Eric (Katie), Laura (Kevin) Wilcox, Ryan (Candace), Nicholas  (Lacey), Katie, Joe (Haley), James Jr. (Jessie), Stacy (Joe) Rawson, Matt, Kyle (Brooke), Michael, and Megan. She was also blessed to be a great-grandmother to Trinity (Johan), Aiden, Tyler, Mason, Landon, Addison, Ocean, Isla, Lucas, Avery, Ashtyn, Dominic, Ava, Braylon, Maddie, Logan, Lilly, Gracie, Colton, Carson, Dalton, James III, Lexi, and Zoey. She was even blessed with one great-great-grandchild, Charly.

Mary Ann is survived by her dear siblings Wally, Vicki, Joann, Carol, Cheryl, Ellen, and Sandy, as well as her sister-in-law, Margaret. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Lily Grzebieniowski, her beloved husband Eugene, her sister Fran, her brother Joseph Jr., her brothers-in-law Bruce and Jack (Eleanor). She is also remembered with love by many cousins, nieces, nephews, neighbors, and lifelong friends.

Mary Ann was known for her love of simple joys — playing card games, tending to her flower gardens, making delicious homemade meat pies, spending peaceful days at the lake, and doting on her beloved dogs. She had a warm, welcoming home where everyone felt like family, and she made each person she loved feel special.

She was deeply loved and will be missed beyond measure.
