Michael Prentiss
Bingham
May 1, 1943 – March 7, 2026
Michael P. Bingham, age 82, of Garden City, Michigan, passed on March 7, 2026.
Michael was born in Ravenna, Ohio, and raised in various places including Pine Grove Mills, Pennsylvania. While in Pine Grove Mills, Scouting first became a part of his life rising through the ranks to Eagle at age 16.
Mike was not a classic academic, but had a very keen mind for how things worked. Nevertheless, he met his wife Marilyn while earning an Associate degree at Henry Ford Community College. He subsequently earned an Automotive Technical Certification.
Mike had a lifelong career with Cadillac; being hired as a walk-in (unheard of) due to his scouting background as an Eagle Scout with the hiring person being a high up volunteer in the local council. He retired as an Associate Engineer in 1999.
Mike had much civic involvement and volunteerism in his adult life including being part of building Santa Land at the City Park, serving on the City Zoning Board of Appeals, aiding with the Straight Farmhouse Museum, and supporting the many organizations that his children were involved with such as the J.R.O.T.C. and many sporting teams.
When his son came of age, Mike was instrumental in starting a Tiger Cub den and became involved with the pack and then troop as his son grew. Mike stayed active with the troop until the day he passed. His legacy of volunteerism was most apparent, however, at Camp Rotary with over 35 years of service which culminated in being honored with the Silver Beaver Award, Scouting’s highest volunteer award.
Beloved husband of Marilyn for 58 wonderful years. Cherished father of Marla (John) Bingham-Melcher, Kevin (April), and the late Lora. Respected grandfather of grandsons Finn and Nate. Dear brother of Sue (Jere) Herr, Patricia, Sara (Ken) VanPortfliet, Thomas, and the late John. He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Cremation took place privately.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Saturday, March 28, 2026, with Visitation from 1pm until the 2pm Service at Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church, 9601 Hubbard Street, Livonia (at West Chicago, west of Merriman Road). A full lunch to follow.
In lieu of flowers memorials suggested to Karmanos Cancer Institute or Scouting America Michigan Crossroads Council.
