Olga Dubriwnyj Solovey Age 81
Beloved wife of the late Bernard. Dear Mother of Andrew (Donna), Kathryn (John ) Babak, Gregory (Cheryl), and Bernie (Ann). Grandmother of Nicholas (Amy), Anne (Gray) Marshall, Steven, Larissa, Cara, Christa, Katie, A.J., and Michael. Sister of Catherine Koneya (the late Mele) and Michael (Nancy) Dubriwny and the late Wally Dubriwny and sister-in-law of Lee Dubriwny. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Olga started playing the piano at the age of 11, attended Cass Technical High School, and earned a bachelor's degree in music education from Wayne State University. She taught vocal music in the Cherry Hill School District for 24 years. Since the age of 16, she accompanied numerous renowned Ukrainian and American soloists, and various ensembles including Detroit's Trembita and Dumka Choirs. Olga served as choir director and cantor of St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church for 32 years. In recent years, she was a cantor at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Ukrainian Catholic Church. Two of her most memorable roles were the assistant conductor for the Detroit Ukrainian Millennium Choir of 1988 and the Ukrainian Jubilee 2000 Choir. More recently, Olga was the accompanist for many performances of the Immaculate Conception Ukrainian Catholic Schools. She was the director of the Zoloti Dzvony (Golden Bells) Seniors Choral Ensemble and also directed a trio of women vocalists, Soloveyky. Olga loved spreading the joy of Ukrainian folk music by playing dinner music and leading sing-alongs. She was also active in many Ukrainian organizations including UNWLA Branch 58 and the Ukrainian Graduates, and served on the Board of the Livonia Symphony. Olga had been recognized for outstanding achievement in both the Ukrainian and American communities. Olga's pride and joy were her children and grandchildren. She delighted in hosting family gatherings.
Visitation Friday 2-9 pm with a 7 pm Panachyda at the John N. Santeiu & Son, Funeral Home, 1139 N. Inkster Rd., Garden City (between Ford Rd. and Cherry Hill). In state Saturday 9 am until 10 am funeral liturgy at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Ukrainian Catholic Church, 26667 Joy Rd., (between Inkster & Beech Daly).
Family suggests memorials to the Ukrainian Catholic Education Foundation, Livonia Symphony Orchestra, or Karmanos Cancer Research for Pancreatic Cancer.
