Obituary

"Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls." Matthew 11:28-29

Ruben Queen, 92 years old, son of Antonio (Reyna) and Antonia (Macías) Queen, was born May 15, 1929 in Homestead, Pennsylvania and entered into eternal rest for his soul on November 26, 2021 in Jackson, Michigan.

Raised with 4 brothers and 3 sisters in towns surrounding Pittsburgh, he enlisted in the U.S. Army after high school graduation and was stationed in Panama before being honorably discharged and pursuing further education through the GI Bill.

He met his wife-to-be through work and married Dorothy Becampis of Detroit, Michigan in August 1954, spending most of their 53 years of marriage raising four daughters and five sons in Garden City, Michigan. Graduating with a Bachelor's degree from Wayne State University, he taught for many years at St. Cyril's of Jerusalem Catholic School in Taylor, Michigan as well as at Burger and Vogel Junior High Schools and Lathers Elementary School in the Garden City School District before retiring from teaching.

His lifelong passion was music and he not only purchased a piano for his family but also bought musical instruments for all of his children so that they were able to play and travel with the concert bands in junior and senior high school. Lengthy road trips and vacations were regular opportunities for him to teach his family songs from the Fred Waring SongBook, cultivating a large repertoire of a cappella car tunes. In addition, he has been a member of SPEBSQSA, now the Barbershop Harmony Society, since 1965, singing tenor with many quartets and choruses as well as singing with his five sons at various Barbershop Brigades. He was honored in 2015 at the Annual Convention in Pittsburgh with special recognition for his 50 years of membership.

He and his family were Charter Members of St. Dunstan's Parish from the time the church first began meeting on Sunday mornings in the Garden City High School, prior to the construction of the church building on Belton. Throughout the years he sang with the Church Choir in addition to serving as a lector, teaching Catechism and organizing the annual men's retreats at St. Paul of the Cross Retreat Center.

In 2014, he moved from Garden City to a cozy cottage near family on Sweezy Lake in Brooklyn, Michigan where he made many friends and enjoyed the beauty of creation, kayaking, pontoon boat rides, and gazing at the constellations in the night sky believing, as written in Psalm 19:1, that "The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork."

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, and is survived by his nine children: Marie Elena (Kevin) Stulp, Judith Anne (Lonnie) Deck, Joe
(Debbie), Renée (Jim) Anderson, David (Bernadette), Tim (Patty), Tom
(Sibrina), Ed (Sabrina), Suzanne Green; 25 grandchildren and 13
great-grandchildren; his brothers Bernie (Flo) Queen and David Queen; sisters-in-law Eleanor (Merritt) Engberg and Jeri Lobb, in addition to many nieces and nephews.

He was dearly loved and will be deeply missed.
