Obituary

Sharon Ann Mayer was born on June 30, 1942 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Detroit, Michigan to Everett & Leta Mayer. They resided at 4775 Wayburn Street Detroit, Michigan. Her baptism was November 1942 at Calvin United Presbyterian Church in Detroit. Sharon was a happy healthy little girl finishing her last few weeks of kindergarten when she contracted the measles and encephalitis, causing her to be extremely mentally challenged. For three months she was hospitalized and her parents were told she would never walk or talk again. The family moved to 6909 Arcola, Garden City, MI. With hopeful hearts they took her home and Sharon was able to walk. Her brother Roger was 18 months old when she became ill. For ten years her parents took care of her every need, but she was unable to communicate with speech or language of any sort. Her condition was very demanding. They took her to doctor after doctor, and prayer groups and faith healers. After much painful consideration Leta & Everett put Sharon in Caro State Institution where she lived for 28 years. They visited every weekend and brought her home for Christmas many times. When Sharon moved to Florence Grove group home in Redford Michigan, Leta was able to visit often. Mary, Mabel and the entire staff under the direction of Mrs. Hayes are angels on earth. God puts people in positions for a reason and the staff at Mary Grove shine at what they do for others. Thank you for all you have done, we really appreciate it.

We know that everything happens for a reason and believe Sharon over the years has taught us to be thankful, caring, and gentle. No one knows what it would be like to be in her condition for the past 64 years. But what we do know is that she is at her reward in heaven with family that loves her. Someday we will join Sharon and know all the stories that she may tell us about her incredible journey in the life she shared on earth.
