Dr. Sudhir Gururao Desai passed away peacefully on August 5th, 2026 at the age of 89. 

He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Sheela Desai, his two children Janhavi Desai (Patrick Brosnan) and Chetan Desai (Kavitha Chandran Desai), and his five beloved grandchildren (Minali, Anya, Nikhil, Vihaan, and Nitesh), along with beloved nephews, nieces, and dear friends who have become chosen family. 

Born on June 1st, 1937 in Hubli, Karnataka in India to Gururao and Indira Desai, he grew up facing many hardships, yet he never allowed this to dim his spirit and sense of hope. He was passionate about science and medicine graduating top of his class at Grand Medical College in Mumbai. In 1963, he bravely immigrated to the United States to continue his education and medical training. Dr. Desai proceeded to lead a prolific career as a pulmonologist at Wayne County General Hospital followed by 32 years devoted to treating thousands of patients at the Detroit VA Hospital and teaching hundreds of students at Wayne State University Medical School. 

All who knew Dr. Desai knew his greatest love was his family. In 1975, Dr. Desai married Sheela, who he lovingly called his soul mate and angel. His life was a living example of what it means to value and love family. He was completely devoted to providing steadfast support and sound advice, teaching the importance of hard work and discipline by example, and always sharing his knowledge, wisdom, and resources so the next generation can succeed. He showed us how to remain curious, continue to learn and better ourselves, and enjoy life. Watching him find joy in painting, traveling around the world, and creating amazing meals in the kitchen was always an inspiration. Across continents and generations, he will be remembered as a revered elder whose calm, steady presence (along with a good sense of humor), intellect, hard work, and endless love built, guided, and protected us all. We will remember, honor, and celebrate his legacy forever. His family will miss him dearly. May his memory be a blessing to all.
