Obituary

Theresa Ann Rawlings (nee Schiffer) joined her beloved husband, Frederick in the loving embrace of our Lord on July 20, 2022, at the age of 90.

Theresa leaves behind her children: Frederick Jr. (Kathy), Debra (Douglas) Turner, and Susan (David) Middleton; grandchildren Douglas Turner Jr., Dawn Marie Leamy, Rebecca (Brian) Ledford, Jason (Michelle) Middleton and children of Frederick Jr. (Angel, Kelly, Freddie, and Beth); many great-grandchildren including dearest Madelyn Sue, Abigail Doreen, Elizabeth Ann, and Beau Frederick; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and friends.

Theresa was born on September 3, 1931, to Ernest and Emma Schiffer. After graduating school, she went on a trip with a friend to New York. There she met the love of her life, Frederick. They were married just three short months later, on November 25, 1950, and together they built a beautiful life.

Theresa enjoyed raising her children and helping others. She insisted on getting her drivers license as a married woman in her 20s so she could have "a little independence". She went back to school at the age of 40 and became a nurse, serving at Four Chaplain's Nursing Home for over 20 years. Once retired, she and Fred traveled, enjoyed weekly poker nights and the occasional casino trip, and never missed a family gathering.

Theresa was devoted to her church of over 60 years, St. Thomas the Apostle (formerly St. Raphael). She volunteered at their annual events, served as a grief minister, made home visits to the infirmed, often taking them the Holy Eucharist, and rarely missed mass. She was also a member of her local TOPS chapter where she had many close friends, and even earned the coveted title of KOP.

Family and church were paramount in Theresa's life, which she often called blessed. She was always one to encourage her family, frequently telling them how proud she was of them or sending notes or newspaper clippings she found relevant in the mail. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren never saw a minor holiday pass without a card from Granny and a brand-new, crisp dollar bill inside. She never turned down a friendly (or maybe not so friendly if she was losing) game of Scrabble or Euchre or a frozen glass of Killian's.  When she knew her family worried about her, she would tease and say she promised to be a "good girl" and have "no shenanigans".

Theresa prayed fervently for her family. While her life without her dear Fred was never complete, she lived it fully, relying on her favorite Bible verse, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." - Philippians 4:13.

Theresa is preceded in death by her dear husband of 46 years, Frederick; beloved grandson Matthew Middleton; parents Ernest & Emma; brothers Joseph, Ernest, Robert and Charles and sister Mildred Spencer.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 24th 3-7pm at Santeiu Funeral Home in Garden City with a rosary at 7pm. A funeral mass will be held at 10am Monday, July 25th at St. Thomas the Apostle, Garden City, followed by interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
