Thomas D. Weiland's Obituary

Thomas passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sofia (“Tony”), in 2018. Together, they shared 60 wonderful years of marriage.

Thomas was a devoted father to Thomas Weiland Jr., CherylAnn (Mike) Patterson, Kathleen (Brian) Bartlett, Linda Weiland, Karan (Scott) Hancock, and Loriann (Ken) Untch. He was a loving and proud grandfather to Brian (Carolina) Bentley, Sarah Bentley, Brandi (Jakub) Miculka, Brian (Adrienne) Tish, Tanya Tish, Alexander Bartlett, Rebecca Bartlett, and twins Alexandria and Kathryn Untch. Tom was very proud that he got to spend time with each of them. He attended many school and sports events in which the "grands" participated. He was also a cherished great-grandfather to Catalina and Desmond Tish, Diego and Eva Bentley, and Ophelia Miculka. Thomas is also survived by his beloved four‑footed companion, Nestle.

Born in Detroit, Thomas was the youngest of five siblings. He met “Tony” in high school and knew immediately that she was the love of his life. Together, they raised their six children in Lincoln Park and Livonia. Thomas worked as a welder for Ford Motor Company for 30 years. In retirement, he and Tony enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their camper. During his travels Tom would collect historical firearms.

Thomas was known for his remarkable ability to fix or build just about anything. A true self‑taught craftsman, he mastered plumbing, electrical work, cement work, car repair and painting, and much more. He designed and built a two‑car garage from the ground up and expanded a three‑bedroom bungalow into a five‑bedroom home by adding a dormer. His skills eventually led him to earn a contractor’s license.

An avid sportsman, Thomas was a proud member of the Western Wayne County Conservation Club, where his talents were invaluable in maintaining and improving the grounds. He and his extended family cherished events like the children's Easter and Halloween Parties. Tom's favorite role was volunteering at the club’s annual Open House, where he loved introducing prospective members to the club’s many sporting and social activities.

After the passing of his wife, Tom joined the "Widowed Friends Group." This group was provided comfort and many enjoyable social activities. He was a muched loved member and known for bringing flowers or small treats for the ladies at their holiday dances. Thomas’s daughter Karan introduced him to the Michigan Freedom Center. There, he became a dedicated volunteer at the military hospitality lounge at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. The lounge provides a peaceful place for active‑duty service members and veterans, and Thomas greatly enjoyed greeting guests and sharing his deep knowledge of military history.

Visitation Sunday, April 12, 2026, from 2-8pm with an evening Scripture Service at John N. Santeiu & Son, Inc., 1139 N. Inkster Road, Garden City (between Ford Road and Cherry Hill). In State Monday, April 13, 2026, 10:30am until the 11am Funeral Service at St. Gerald Catholic Church, 21300 Farmington Road, Farmington (between 8 Mile Road and 9 Mile Road).

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Michigan Armed Forces Hospitality Center, 2581 World Gateway Place, Detroit, MI 48242.
