William F. Hackett started W.F. Hackett and Son Funeral Home in 1903 in SW Detroit on the corner of Vernor Hwy and Junction St. For almost 80 years the family firm served the Holy Redeemer Parish and the surrounding community.
William was later joined in the firm by several of his children but due to illness, his son, Francis L. Hackett, was the only one to survive and carry on the family business.
He eventually passed the business on to his daughter, Mary Kay Hackett who became one of the first few women to be licensed in mortuary science in the state of Michigan.
She later married her classmate, William J. Metcalf whom she met while attending mortuary science school right after WWII. William J. Metcalf was an accomplished pilot in WWII and was attending mortuary science school under the GI bill so he could join his family firm back in Grand Rapids, MI.
They married in 1948 and together managed both locations, eventually closing the Detroit location in 1981. In 1960, construction began on the Dearborn funeral home (our current location). The business name was eventually changed to include both the Hackett and the Metcalf names. The fourth generation to enter the business was Thomas P. Metcalf (son of Mary Kay & William Metcalf). He began working at the family funeral homes in his teen years.
