John & Mildred Santeiu, Sr.
Founders
Santeiu Funeral Home was founded in 1936 on Burnett Street in Detroit by John N. Santeiu, Sr. (1911-1988) and his wife Mildred (1916-2007) when they moved to Michigan from Chicago. As was the custom of the time, funeral services were often conducted in the family’s home.
After 10 years in business with a storefront funeral home, John, Sr. fulfilled his dream of building his own funeral home.
The new facility was located on Tireman in Dearborn with much of the construction done by John and his brother George. This original facility in Dearborn was closed in 1977 upon the retirement of John, Sr.
John, Sr. had a distinguished record of service in his profession and in the civic and business life of his community. He served two terms on the Michigan State Board of Mortuary Science, was involved in the National Conference of Funeral Service Examining Boards, and served as President of the Michigan Funeral Directors Association. He was also very active in the Dearborn Lions Club, local politics, his church, and the Romanian community.
